As you and your partner reach your 10-year wedding anniversary, you may want to hold each other and look back through your wedding album. It’s romantic and is a reminder of why and how you started your life together. So, the last thing you will want is to look at your wedding dress and say, ‘Oh my gosh! What was I thinking?’
Like most fashion, wedding dresses can have a dated image, and choosing a wedding dress that represents the era that you got married in may seem like a good idea at the time, but it is not the way to go for truly stunning photos that last years.
So, how can you hunt for a timeless wedding dress that you will love 20 years down the line?
Look At The Fabric
When you are looking at wedding dresses, you will see a few standard materials that seemingly never go out of fashion. These include chiffon, silk, lace, and satin. It’s easy to see why- you combine these fabrics, and you have a beautiful wedding dress! There is also something so elegant about a simple silk gown that has chiffon sleeves, isn’t there? There is another area to this, too; you don’t have to look far for the right accessories. A lace veil will pair perfectly with all of these materials, as will a hairpiece and even the floral bouquet that you hold.
Look at The Shape
Dresses, in particular, wedding dresses, are renowned for looking one way on the hanger and looking completely different when they are put on. So, have a look at your body shape honestly, and assess which dress shape would be the best match. The wedding store assistant should be able to help you here. For hourglass shapes, a fitted gown with a mermaid tail is best. For pear shapes, an A-line dress is ideal. Yes, the average wedding store will usually stock all of these types, so take along your best friends, your mom, or anyone else (except the groom) to try on as many types as you can!
Less is More
If you are a fan of the Big Bang Theory TV show, you may remember the unforgettable episode where Amy goes wedding dress shopping with Bernadette and Penny. She finds her ‘perfect’ dress, which the other two think looks awful. Objectively, it does, but why? Simply put, there is too much going on with it! So, when it comes to choosing the perfect dress to wear at your wedding, try to keep it simple. This will help give you those all-important timeless photos 20 years down the line and help you feel like a princess on the big day.
Color
There have been fads of people choosing wedding gowns that are in red, gold, and even black. That’s all OK, but if you want a timeless dress, try to keep any color on the gown to a minimum. Make sure that the dress is white, cream, or ivory (there are differences in these colors!) and that if there is any gold, silver, or pink on the dress, it is kept to a minimum. Again, a white wedding gown is timeless- a white one with fuchsia pink flowers on the bodice is not!
