How To Effectively Decorate With Side Tables and Table Lamps

The right side table and lamp can brighten up a space

Are you thinking about getting a butler side table? The small end tables have a rich history and can add the right touch to a living or family room.

The tables are also functional, adding to their appeal.

Also known as tea trays or serving tray tables, these tables are typically made from wood and have removable trays with convenient side handles.

Choosing the Right Side Table

Serving tray tables come in a variety of styles. Typically, choosing the right style comes down to personal taste.

You also want the end table to go with your existing furniture. For example, if you have modern furniture, a drum-style side table may not be the best option.

Here’s a look at the different types of side tables.

Choose a Base and Top Shape

There are four basic types of bases for end tables,

  1. Four legs. This type of base works well in any space and can be paired with any top shape. End tables with four legs often include other practical features, such as drawers or shelves.
  2. Pedestal. This type of end table base is crafted with one or more columns. Often with a round shape and turned details, pedestal end tables add classic style with a slim silhouette
  3. Drum. End tables with drum bases are shaped like a drum. The cylinder-style base is often constructed from metal, wood, or wicker. The drum shape brings a unique touch and added texture to the room.
  4. Trestle. Trestle bases are designed with two trestles connected with a horizontal bar or beam.

Okay, now let’s talk about the top. The base often determines the shape of the top. For example, a butler side table with a drum base usually comes with a round top.

However, tables with four legs, a pedestal, or a trestle base can have either a square or rectangle top.

  • Square-shaped tops are versatile and pair well with any style of sofa. Square end tables offer more surface space than round tables and fit well in corners.
  • Round shape tops can be styled with a variety of sofas or chairs. Round side tables are a great way to experiment with different shapes and soften angular sofas or chairs.
  • Rectangle tops are typically wider or narrower than square-end table designs. For spacious living rooms, wide rectangle end tables add surface space and structure beside the sofa. Narrow rectangle end tables make the most of compact spaces and often have shelves or drawers built into the table.

Decorating Your End Table

Everyone has different decorating tastes and side tables accommodate almost any style. You can use the tables to hold a plant, the remote, or a book and cup of tea.
