Behind the Scenes: The Process of Designing and Creating Custom Leotards

There’s a reason why the global dancewear market is expected to reach a staggering $1.4 billion by the year 2028. Whether you’re dancing for pleasure, art, or competitions, the activity requires specialized clothing like leotards.

Leotards are also important for sports like gymnastics. Unfortunately, finding a leotard that fits correctly and meets your design expectations can be hard to find. The good news is that you can always create your custom leotards.

But how do you go about this design process? And should you go DIY or hire a professional for sewing? In this guide, we’ll be answering some of these questions so you end up with the best leotard for your specific needs.

Get Some Sources of Inspiration

Before you begin anything you should begin brainstorming some dancewear design ideas. The best way to do this is to turn to some sources of inspiration. Sometimes, the inspiration might be the event that you’re making the leotard for.

An example might be swans if you’re putting on a production of Swan Lake with dance costumes. However, if you’re making the leotard for yourself you can use anything as inspiration. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box.

A favorite book, movie, or even location can unlock hidden ideas. Or break out some magazines and catalogs to see what you like and don’t like. Leotards can be tricky because you need to mix form with fashion.

However, there’s still plenty of artistic freedom if you’re making one on your own. If you’re feeling, consider making a mood board. This can help you define the ideas you want to include in your leotard.

Sketch a Rough Design

Start making your ideas come to life. The best to do this is with some rough sketches of your custom leotard design. Remember you’re still in the brainstorming phase here.

So you shouldn’t be worried about making it perfect. If it looks messy, that’s fine. What’s important is that you get some of your inspiration on the page. From there you can either refine your design or combine certain sketches.

This is the experimentation stage so not everything you make will look great. But once you’ve defined the elements you want to include you can get down to the design stage.

Design It

Now it’s time to make custom dance designs. Sloppiness does matter here. You want everything to be perfect right down to the dimensions. If you’re a talented drawer or digital artist, you can do this by hand.

Or, if you don’t have much artistic skill you can use a premade template to bring your design to life. Add as much detail to your design as you’re able. Make notes on the side about materials, sewing methods, or any other things you want to keep in mind during the creation phase.

Once you have the design on the page you can begin the process of making it.

Gather the Necessary Material

You will need two yards of the material you want to work with. Most of the time you can make it with one yard, but it’s smart to get two just to play it safe. Keep in mind that this should be a stretchy type of fabric.

Spandex works great, but you can also use stretch cotton or lycra. Just avoid stiff material that will potentially rip with movement. You should also get any additional material that you want to attach to the leotard.

For example, if you’re making custom leotards for a dance recital you might want to get bulk rhinestones. The same goes for any bows or other additions you may want.

To make your leotard you will need a sewing machine, pins, and a sharp pair of scissors. You will also need either paper or a printed template to trace the leotard designs onto your fabric.

Cut and Sew the Leotard

Before you can begin cutting and sewing the leotard you first need to come up with a design. There are two ways you can do this. First, you can trace the outline of an existing leotard you own that fits you well.

Second, you can use one of the many design templates available online. Just make sure you get your size measurements correct before you begin. Next, choose two yards of your material.

Place your design over the material and weigh it in place in the corners using pins. Now, cut out the pattern of your design or template.

Make sure to use sharp scissors. At this point, you should be left with three sections: the front, back, and sleeves of the leotard.

Pin the front and back to one another and begin sewing. You want to start at the sides, then work your way around the crotch and up to the shoulders.

Make sure you don’t sew the neck. Then, all you need to do is pin and sew the sleeves and you’re all set!

Consider Hiring a Professional

If you don’t have the material or the skill for making dancewear, don’t feel bad. Learning how to make an efficient leotard can take a lot of time and money. It’s not likely that your first try will be all that great.

If you want to skip the hassle, we recommend finding a professional company that can make this type of customized dancewear. There are plenty of options that allow you to create a design that the sewers will bring to life.

This ensures that you get a quality leotard the first time around. It can also help you avoid embarrassing situations where your first-time leotard rips while you’re dancing.
