A Guide to Finding the Best SPF for Sensitive Skin

Have you ever applied SPF lotion and felt itchy or tingly afterward?

Skin irritations are common with SPF, but if you buy the right kind, you won’t have any issues. Whether the active ingredients are too powerful or there are artificial dyes and scents, you should know what to look for.

Take a look below and follow the steps to find the best SPF for sensitive skin!

    Skip Artificial Scents & Dyes

One of the most important things to remember while looking for SPF for sensitive skin is that some include dyes and scents.

Artificial scents and colors tend to irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions. When it comes to SPF30 vs SPF50, you’re less likely to encounter artificial ingredients, the higher the number. You can typically identify these ingredients by smelling or looking at the colors, but you should always reference the labels.

    Pay Attention to Active Ingredients

If your skin gets easily irritated, there’s a possibility that you’re allergic to the active ingredients.

Oxybenzone and benzophenone-3 are known for triggering reactions. Aside from red bumps, itchy skin, and discomfort, you may even experience asthmatic symptoms. Pay attention to your body when trying a new SPF and apply it in small amounts to test your reaction.

For people with severe skin allergies, you may want to test them out near urgent care or keep medicine nearby. Always talk to your doctor or dermatologist if you need guidance with skin protection.

    Don’t Let Ads Trick You

Skincare companies have a lot of tricks up their sleeve to market products, many of which you don’t want to follow.

Misleading marketing can be hard to spot, especially when companies know which words to use. A good rule to follow is to search for the Skin Cancer Foundation logo. This foundation uses two levels, SPF and UV protection, to compare the effectiveness of products.

If you want sunscreen for sensitive skin, look for mineral filters. Chemical filters are most commonly used by mass-production companies. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide will block the UV rays and provide gentle protection.

    Avoid Synthetic Ingredients

You may want to put the bottle down if you see the words Phenoxyethanol or Paraben.

These synthetic ingredients are often included in SPFs but are notorious for causing skin reactions. Natural ingredients can reduce your risk of redness, swelling, or itching. Try to look for SPF products with aloe vera, calendula, and coconut oil.

Sunflower oil and chamomile flower extract are other natural ingredients to watch for. Treat your SPF like food items and check the labels before buying to prevent discomfort.

Shield Your Body with SPF for Sensitive Skin

There’s nothing worse than conducting a trial and error phase while looking for SPF for sensitive skin.

You shouldn’t have to do hours of research or experience skin irritations to shield yourself from the sun. No matter how sensitive your skin is, natural and gentle ingredients are a must. If you can avoid synthetic ingredients, you can reduce your worries and enjoy your time outside.
