Regarding seafood, few places can rival the diversity and quality found in Alaska. Known for its pristine waters and sustainable fishing practices, this northern state is a seafood lover’s paradise. And among all the different types of fish you can find in Alaska, salmon varieties are arguably the crown jewel.

But not all salmon are created equal. This document will look closer at 5 types of Alaskan salmon you must try when visiting this beautiful state.

    1. The Kings of Salmon: Chinook

Also known as “King” or “Tyee” salmon, Chinook is the largest and most prized species of Alaskan salmon. With its rich and buttery flavor, it is often considered the most delicious of all salmon types. Chinook salmon can grow up to 58 inches in length and weigh over 120 pounds, making it a true king of the waters.

These fish are typically found in the northernmost parts of Alaska, such as the Yukon River or Bristol Bay. They are also known for their bright red-orange flesh, making them a visually stunning addition to any plate.

    2. The Most Abundant: Sockeye

While Chinook may be the king, Sockeye is often considered the most abundant species of Alaskan salmon. Also known as “Red” salmon due to its deep red color, Sockeye can be found in many parts of Alaska, including the Copper River and Bristol Bay.

Sockeye salmon is known for its firm texture and rich flavor. It is also a popular choice for canning due to its high oil content, making it perfect for smoked salmon dishes.

    3. The Superfood: Coho

Coho salmon, also known as “Silver” salmon, is not only delicious, but it is also packed with essential nutrients. Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B12 and D, and minerals such as selenium and potassium, Coho salmon is often referred to as a superfood.

This type of salmon is known for its delicate flavor and tender texture. It can be found in various parts of Alaska, including the Kenai River and Prince William Sound.

    4. The Mighty Chum

Chum salmon, also known as “Keta” or “Dog” salmon, may not be as well-known as the other species on this list, but it is just as delicious. With its firm texture and mild flavor, chum salmon is a versatile fish that can be used in various cooking methods.

Chum salmon is often found in Alaska’s Cook Inlet and Kuskokwim River areas. It is also a popular choice for commercial fishing due to its abundance and low price compared to other species.

    5. The Rare Gem: Pink

Last but certainly not least, we have pink salmon, also known as “Humpback” or “Humpy” salmon. While it may not be as large or rich in flavor as the other types, pink salmon is a rare gem that should not be underestimated.

Pink salmon can be found in various parts of Alaska, including the Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound. It is known for its delicate and flaky flesh, making it perfect for grilling or baking.
